Mean, median, mode calculator
Identify and Calculate the Mean, Median, and Mode
These a three types of averages
How to Calculate the Mean average
The mean, commonly referred to as the average, is calculated by adding up the numbers and dividing the total by the quantity of numbers. For example, if we have a list of numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, ,7, 8, 9, 10. The mean average is calculated using the following steps:
Step 1
3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 52
Step 2
52 / 8 = 6.5
Result
The mean average of the list of numbers set is 6.5.
How to find the Median
The median is the middle score of a distribution. To calculate the median use the following steps
Step 1
Arrange the numbers in numerical order.
Step 2
Count how many numbers you have.
Step 3
If you have an odd number, divide by 2 and round up to get the position of the median number.
If you have an even number, divide by 2. Go to the number in that position and average it with the number in the next higher position to get the median.
As an example, if we use the numbers: 4, 6, 9, 9, 11. Since we have an odd number, the median would be 9. We have five numbers, so we divide 5 by 2 to get 2.5, and round up to 3. The number in the third position is the median.
Where we have an even number there is no single middle score. In this case we need to take the average of the middle two scores, calculating their mean.
How to calculate the Mode
The mode is the most frequently occurring score in a within a set of numbers, simply select the most common score as your mode. For example, using the numbers of 2, 4, 5, 4, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 9. The mode of these numbers would be 4 as this is the most frequently occurring number. Where there is a very large set of numbers frequency distribution can be created to help determine the mode.
