Subtracting fractions calculator

This calculator takes two fractions as input and subtracts them. The result is simplified.

In the "Fraction 1" input field, enter a fraction in the format "a/b", where a is the numerator and b is the denominator (for example, "3/4").

In the "Fraction 2" input field, enter another fraction in the same format (for example, "2/5").

Click the "Subtract" button. The result of subtracting the two fractions will be displayed below the button in the format "a/b" (for example, "11/20").

How to subtract fractions

Subtracting fractions involves finding a common denominator and then subtracting the numerators while keeping the denominator the same. Here are the steps to subtract fractions:

  1. Find the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators of the two fractions. The LCM is the smallest number that both denominators can divide into without leaving a remainder.
  2. Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the LCM divided by its denominator. Do the same for the second fraction. This will make the denominators of both fractions equal to the LCM.
  3. Subtract the two new numerators from each other. The result is the numerator of the answer fraction.
  4. The denominator of the answer fraction is the LCM found in step 1.
  5. Simplify the fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).
